New Workshops: 'Crowdfunding Civinomicon' and 'Covered

1. Crowdfunding Civinomicon: We Need Your Help!

Civinomicon constitutes a fundamental shift in the Gov 2.0 movement by taking a proactive and inclusive approach to addressing community needs, both online and off. This 3 day community summit will bring together over 100 local residents, elected officials and government staff to imagine the future of Santa Cruz. However, it is going to take a lot to ensure that this event is successful, which is why we need your help. Please take a moment to review our Indiegogo crowdfunding page and watch our video. This will give you more information about the event and explain why it is so unique. If you like what you see and think our cause is noble, any support would be greatly appreciated. We also have some cool rewards for those who contribute.

2. New Workshop – Covered California: Is the Affordable Care Act Working For You?

Parts of the Affordable Care Act, often referred to as Obamacare, went into effect on October 1st, prompting thousands to sign up for California’s statewide insurance exchange. The individual mandate to purchase health insurance goes into effect at the beginning of 2014. Regardless of how you feel about the ACA on a political level, we all share a common goal in wanting to make healthcare more affordable and effective. So give us your input in the new workshop Covered California: Is the Affordable Care Act Working For You?

3. Santa Cruz City Council Agendas Now Online for Voting

Not everyone can attend every city council meeting. Some people are working during those times, or have kids to take care of, and some don’t have access to transportation. Sure you can passively watch the meetings on community tv, but your ability to engage is still limited. Now imagine that you could review the agenda beforehand, vote on the issues being considered, and have a discussion with other community members about those items. Imagine no further. Starting this Thursday every Santa Cruz city council agenda will be hosted online in a unique workshop on Civinomics. Be on the lookout for this workshop Friday morning on the Santa Cruz page.

4. New Features and Bug Fixes

The new Twitter signup, login and share features were added last week, making it even easier to become a member and participate.

5. Updates on Civinomicon: Confirmed Facilitators

One of the most unique aspects of Civinomicon 2013 will be the opportunity to break out into small, topical groups to discuss the issues you care about in depth. For our part, we want to provide knowledgeable facilitators that can help lead and bring about the best discussion and ideas possible. With that in mind, we are proud to announce that Karena Pushnik, from the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission, will be facilitating the topic group on Transportation. If you know someone who you think would be good at leading a discussion on a certain topic, let us know by emailing us

How NASA Plans to Make Astrophysics Fun With an Ambitious Social Game
Imagine if government agencies made social games. Who wouldn’t enjoy the Federal Reserve’s Asset-Backed SecuritiesVille, or the Census Bureau’s World of FormCraft?
Maybe not.
But what about NASA? After all, exploring space is a staple motif of the video game pantheon.
NASA’s educational efforts have blossomed in the digital age. Its website is choc-full of gorgeous multimedia, and astronauts themselves are tweeting from orbit
